Your acupuncture space

Relax and let everything melt away. Acupuncture at Tia is done in a semi-private room surrounded by curtains and supported by calming sounds and mood lighting.

Your acupuncture session

Your 60-minute session is split into two parts: 20 minutes with your provider to discuss your symptoms, goals, and progress — whether you're dealing with digestive issues, menstrual pain, migraines, or coordinating care around an IUD insertion or removal — then 40 minutes of deep relaxation while the needles do their magic.

In Los Angeles and San Francisco, insurance may cover your visit. To confirm, call the number on the back of your card and ask: what are my acupuncture benefits, does my plan use American Specialty Health (ASH), and is Tia in-network at my location? Note that many plans only cover acupuncture for specific diagnoses like back pain — not for stress, fertility, or digestive health. Read more here.

In New York and Scottsdale, Tia does not accept insurance for acupuncture. You'll pay the cash price above - select New York or Arizona.

Acupuncture FAQ

How does acupuncture work?

From a Chinese Medicine POV, acupuncture stimulates specific points on the body and reminds the body where to send extra-love. The hypothesis is that it triggers blood flow, which initiates an immune response that helps the body heal. A more Western theory is that certain acupuncture points stimulate nerves that then trigger the brain to release hormones that can reduce pain, inflammation, and relax the nervous system.

Here are a few additional facts about Acupuncture:

  • Acupuncture has a calming effect on the nervous system, taking our bodies from “fight or flight” to “rest and digest”
  • By reducing stress, acupuncture reduces inflammation (which is a trigger for ANY health concern), facilitates our bodies’ ability to heal, improves blood circulation, and makes us feel a resounding sense of calm.
  • Given acupunctures’ ability to decrease stress and inflammation, it is an incredible tool to help treat, alleviate and relieve most unpleasant and unwanted symptoms throughout the body
Do you take insurance for acupuncture?

This is completely depending on the market you’re in and your insurance plan. We are in network with a select number of insurance billers in our LA + SF and are cash only in our NY and AZ markets. Tia does not accept Anthem, Blue Shield, or insurance plans that use American Specialty Health (ASH) for acupuncture benefits. Please head here for specific details and some questions to support you when calling your insurance for details: Ask Tia (https://asktia.com/acupuncture-benefits/)We can always offer superbills at your request to be submitted to your insurance for possible reimbursement following your visit.

How much will my appointment cost?

If you are using insurance for services, the cost or “patient responsibility” will vary depending on your plan and specified service. Our Tia Care Coordinators can help you assess you patient responsibility by running an eligibility check ahead of your appointment. You can view our full cash price list here.

Can I get acupuncture if I'm pregnant?

Yes! Acupuncture is safe and actually quite beneficial throughout all stages of pregnancy to help support you in feeling your best. Acupuncture has been known to help reduce morning sickness + nausea, support healthy energy levels, regulate digestion and help to reduce pain (back, low back, sciatic, hip, etc.) associated with pregnancy.

Can acupuncture help with fertility?

Yes! Acupuncture can be used to support your body during the preconception phase (as well as throughout pregnancy!) through helping to regulate your menstrual cycle, support healthy blood flow to your reproductive organs, balancing hormones and reducing stress levels. There have been many studies showing how acupuncture has helped to increase odds of conception.

What should I do before coming in for acupuncture?

Here are some pro tips from our provider team: make sure to eat at least two hours before your session, stay hydrated, and wear loose-fitting, comfortable clothing.

Does acupuncture hurt?

The most simple answer to this question is usually not! Depending on the thickness of the skin on the areas of the body we are working on, you may feel the needles go in, but there should be no sharp or painful sensations. Once the needles are in, people describe feelings of warmth, tingling or heaviness where the needles have been inserted; these are all signs that blood flow is circulating. Believe it or not, most people actually fall asleep during their treatment.

What should I do after my acupuncture treatment?

After your session, allow your body time to restore. Make sure to drink plenty of water, avoid strenuous physical activity, and listen to your body! Take time to adjust back into your day. It can be normal to feel a little faint or signs of a headache. These sensations after your treatment, especially if you didn’t eat or drink anything before your acupuncture can be normal. We recommend drinking extra water and eating a protein rich snack after your appointment.

How many sessions does it take to see benefits from acupuncture?

We've gotten used to quick fixes, but acupuncture is about balance. While every patient is different, the benefits and longer-term improvements from acupuncture take time (we see it often takes up to 6 treatments within 3-month window). You and your acupuncturist can design a treatment plan that is right for you and your goals.

Can I workout after acupuncture session?

We generally recommend waiting at least 1 hour or so before jumping into a workout after acupuncture, especially if it’s high intensity. If you do, make sure to drink extra water and make sure you’re well fed.

How often should I come back for Acupuncture?

Your acupuncturist will include your custom recommendation on your care plan, but for most, we recommend following up within the first week of your first session and continuing weekly sessions for 4-6 weeks.

With more acute concerns, like pain above a 5/10 pain scale or high anxiety, it may be recommended to come in 2 times a week until those initial concerns subside.
